Gears of War: Judgment’s art director calls out the wannabes

Chris Perna, the art director forGears of War: Judgment, recently had some choice words for detractors of Epic Games’ flagship series. In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine, Perna stated that the only reasonGears of Waris considered a stereotypical shooter is because so many other games imitated its look and feel, presumably to capitalize on the franchise’s popularity and market success.

Perna went on to say “WhenGearscame out it was fresh, it was dark. That’s what it’s meant to be, right? No apologies there. It was a brutal game — it was meant to be. Then everybody copied us and copied our look, and the market was flooded withGearsclones, which hurts the original.”

However, for all of the negative sentiment, Perna seems intent on moving in a very positive direction withGears of War: Judgment. In the OXM piece, he goes on to explain that the color palette has improved with each subsequent game, and thatJudgmentwill be the best-looking title in the franchise.
