Konami still owns the rights

It was announced this morning that Hideo Kojima has finally escaped from the talons of Konami and hasformed Kojima Productions, his own independent studio. For its first project, Kojima Productions will be partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment, however the specifics of that deal weren’t initially made clear.

In aQ&A posted by PlayStation’s EU Community Manager, we’ve been given a whole load of new details and clarification about what exactly this partnership will entail.

The big thing to take away from the Q&A is that Sony has console exclusivity for Kojima Productions’ first project, which means there is no chance of seeing it on Xbox One or Wii U. A PC portwillbe coming an undisclosed amount of time after the PlayStation launch, though.

Sony is not financially investing in Kojima Productions, and the studio will be remaining completely independent. As far as Sony’s involvement in the game, Sony Computer Entertainment will be publishing the game and providing development support should Kojima need it.

The game is, unsurprisingly, not going to be aMetal Gearor aSilent Hillgame, as unfortunately Konami still own the rights to both IPs. Kojima Productions’ first game will be something completely new, but neither Sony nor Kojima are talking about what it is just yet. The announcement was made as soon as the contract was finalised, so the game’s probably still in very early development.

Right now, the only platform the game is confirmed to be releasing on is the PlayStation 4. PlayStation VR and the PlayStation Vita are mentioned in the Q&A, however Sony is not talking about them just yet. They’ve not said outright that they’renotcoming to those platforms though, so there is still a chance you’ll see a VR Kojima game in the future.

You can read thefull Q&A on Medium, but to be honest it’s just a lot of “we’re not talking about that yet.”

Personally, I’ll be very surprised if we don’t hear about this game (and potentially aShenmue 3-style crowdfunding launch) at E3 2016.
