BioShock

is going to be magnificent. You don’t need anybody here to tell you that. This latest video, however, has pretty much confirmed to me thatBioShockis capable of becoming THE most important videogame of this current generation and, quite possibly, all of recent memory. Not only does the gameplay look amazing, the graphics superb and the atmosphere perfect, but the stark moral choices presented to the player along the way, the true sense of dilemma — it’s that scope of deep, almost philosophical thought that setsBioShockapart and will earn it a place in history. Knowing that the destruction of your chief enemy will make a little girl scream in horror and ask “Mr. Bubbles” why he won’t move? Yes, this is a game that will traumatize me — in a very good way.

The ambitious goal ofBioShockis to make you feel part of a living, breathing (albeit twisted and corrupted) world. Rapture will be full of enemies who’s interactions with each other will be just as pronounced as their interactions with you. The idea of events unfolding in real time around you, creatures going about their business, not even always paying attention to the player, is something I’ve wanted fully captured in a game for a very long time, andBioShockmay answer that desire. Still though, I can’t get over the Little Sister/Big Daddy relationship. So touching and yet … so horrifying. Just watch the video. It gave me chills.
