Carbon Games’ wonderful blend of arcade-style shooting and real-time strategyAirMechhas come to Steam and is currently in closed testing. The studio has details on how you may participateover here, but the short of it is that you’ll need to “like” their Facebook or Google+ account for a key. Those of us who already have anAirMechaccount can link it up to this Steam version, though that’s not a requirement. The game is nearing the end of its alpha and preparing to enter beta, but don’t let that scare you off: it’s still pretty great as is....

The 16-bit space opera is back Just in case you aren’t already awash in classic shmup action this year, Ratalaika Gameshas announcedthat the dramatic Sega Mega Drive releaseGleylancerwill be getting a rerelease on modern platforms next week. The 16-bit epic will blast off once again on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms on October 15, priced at around $7. Originally released in 1992 exclusively for the Sega console,Gleylancer, (or “Gley Lancer” in some circles), is a sci-fi themed, horizontally scrolling shmup, and sees players jetting into the outer reaches of the galaxy in a laser-blastin’ battle against an unknown alien force....

It appears that the second coming, Sony’s recent PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.40, has been having some issues. Reports have rolled in that after updating to the latest version of the software — which provides in-game XMB and support for the achievement-like trophies, among other things — consoles have been rendered inoperable. This has been affecting systems of all shapes and sizes, with no obvious pattern that’s yet to emerge. Some brave users have removed and reformatted their hard drives, which seems to have done the trick....
