Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma says finding treasure is ‘the most fun’ part of Zelda

Puzzles shouldn’t be too hard: ‘It would be better to use a ‘gimmick’ or ‘trick” Legend of Zeldadirector and producer Eiji Aonuma talked a bit about the series on Nintendo Japan’s new (nicely designed)Nintendo News page(as translated byNintendo Everything). Remember when you had to close the DS inPhantom Hourglass? That stumped me, proving my long dulled capacity for lateral thinking. “It is said that one of the interesting things aboutZeldais the ‘nazotoki’ (nazotoki literally means ‘solving a puzzle or riddle’),” Aonuma said....

Overwatch 2 was my biggest disappointment of last year

The series feels like it lost its heart Overwatchis by far my most-played game of all time, clocking in somewhere in the 1,000+ hours mark over multiple accounts. I used to play with a team every night in college, and I got so close with those guys, I even went to one of their weddings. It was a huge part of my life for a long time, and then it just… wasn’t....

Pokemon Ranch Channel reveal doesn’t actually reveal anything

The above clip is direct footage from Nintendo’s press event yesterday when they dropped all sorts of bombs regardinghedgehogs, motorcyclesand most importantlyPokémon-flavored brand synergy. While the footage doesn’t really tell us anything — assuming my audience, like myself, has no ability to speak Japanese — those pictures of ambling Pokémon and giddy Miis certainly excite every part of me that has ever believed in the power of downloadable content. Sure,Puzzle Questhas been fun, andEveryday Shooteris intriguing, but without a meandering Buneary nearby, it’s apparent that everything that has come before has all been in preparation for Nintendo’sPokémon Ranch Channel....

Review in Progress: Diablo Immortal

Don’t you have PCs? Diablo Immortalhas indeed been a wild ride. Blizzard could have announced it as one of the first things at BlizzCon 2018 (instead of the closer),andtease an eventual PC port, andread the room and resisted the urge to play up the mobile-only nature of the game in a room full of PC players. Alas, new Blizzard has made quite a few mistakes (some PR-related,some on a game design level, and someon a legal scale), so it’s par for the course....

Ryse: Son of Rome: A time of great unrest

Battle system isn’t QTEs, but still isn’t great People keep asking me aboutRyse: Son of Rome. I think everyone has questions because we’ve heard so many conflicting things about the Xbox One launch title since its announcement. Is it a string of quick time events? How does it use Kinect? How’s the combat? I spent hours withRyse, playing from its beginning through five levels, putting it fully through its paces. Knowing that some of you are on the fence on this one, I’m glad I can now give a clearer picture this week as we’re just days away from the Xbox One launch....

Square Enix releasing Final Fantasy XIV Game of the Year edition

Wow a game that actually won some Game of the Year awards On November 14th, Square Enix will release a “Game of the Year” edition for FinalFantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It comes with a lot of physical goodies, including a printed book and five art cards. On the digital side it comes with the game of course, and 90 total days of playtime. The package also includes “all of the updates so far,” but since it’s an MMO and you need to login and update to the latest version anyways, that’s a given — there have been zero paid expansions so far (though one is coming next year)....
