With an opening ceremony In typical Square Enix fashion, we had an announcement for a date for an announcement this past week. Several days ago the publisher noted that they would be revealing theirFinal Fantasy30th anniversary plans “soon,” which evidently involves the planning of the plan. Just today we’ve learned that the opening ceremony will be held on January 31, so we still have over a month away until we learn what’s actually going on with this, amidst the myriad rumors of remakes and anFFVIIepisodic release in 2016....

Another personal story Having recently broughtPapo & Yoto Steam, developer Minority Media is starting the cycle over again with its next game,Silent Enemy. In this atypical behind-the-scenes promotional video, the studio talks more about the message of this title than, say, raw gameplay details. This time around, the theme relates to bullying. It’s hard to say much more than that in this early, abstract state. While not every game needs to have a message, I can respect those that do....

While the majority ofForza Motorsport‘s post-launch content updateshave included flashy new tracks and such, Update 8 foregoes anything of the sort. Instead, it’s quality-of-life o’clock, and Turn 10 aims to deliver. Included are an improved racing AI, vinyl editing boons, a revision of safety ratings, and heaps more. As usual,Forza Motorsport‘s Update 8 comes alongside anew seasonal content revision, this time focusing on vehicles that walk the knife’s edge between being a full-blooded track monster and a production-tier road car....

Pure tactical goodness on the go Frozen Synapsecame out in 2011 and is one of the most tactical and intelligent games I’ve ever played. The breadth of information you need to take into account before committing to a move is insane! If you didn’t account for that grenade launcher to fire around the corner, then you might have just sacrificed you entire team. Mode 7, the developer of the original game, is teaming up with Double Eleven to bring the tactical goodness to both the PlayStation 3 and Vita some time this year....

Hooray for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One There was some initial skepticism when it came toGeometry Wars 3: Dimensionsand its so-called “3D action.” For starters, it’s been several years since the last games entered our lives to rekindle old leaderboard feuds. There was also confusion surrounding developer Lucid Games who, as it turns out, is made up of former Bizarre Creations staff. Even if I hadn’t known that fact going in, I like to think I would’ve picked up on it instinctively during a hands-on session at PAX Prime....

[Update:Encouraged by the rate at which the original goal of $6,000 was reached, Anita hasextended the scope of the seriesto suit demand. Five more tropes have been referenced as research points, each warranting its own 10-20 minute video should the relevant funding target be met. These are the Voodoo Priestess/Tribal Sorceress, Women as Reward, Mrs. Male Character, “Ugly” Equals Evil, and the Man With Boobs tropes. I’m particularly curious to see how the third and last on that list will be differentiated....

Addressing an earnings briefing (viaGamespot), CEO of Rockstar’s publisher Take-Two said that even two years on, players continued to be “highly engaged” with the multiplayer game. Though he didn’t back up the statement with concrete figures, CEO Strauss Zelnick said the game had it’s highest ever period of active players – and revenue – over the recent holiday period....
